Palazzo Castro Grimaldi stands in a unique position at the heart of Modica Alta. The two balconies offer a view that includes most of the historical centre – the imposing Duomo di San Giorgio nearby, the villas of the nobility of Modica Alta and Modica Bassa and the cluster of houses built on the hillsides of the city.
Since 1903, when the building was completed, its interior – furnishings, wallpaper, frescos, paintings and china have not changed. The signs of the times have not been deleted, so as to preserve its atmosphere and the ancient household traditions intact.
The interior design is typical of the villas the Sicilian nobility built at the end of the nineteenth and beginning of the twentieth century.
The best local artisans created sumptuous detail and decoration in the shape of landscape frescos, magnificent satin wallpaper, vases and preciously manufactured furnishings that provide the rooms with the unmistakable taste of the local nobility.
All of this makes the Palazzo an ideal setting for private parties, exclusive dinners but also photographic and video shootings. In fact, Palazzo Castro Grimaldi was the set of some of the scenes of the renowned television series “Il commissario Montalbano”.
Only the first floor (piano nobile) is for rent. The larger part of the building cannot be visited as it is still in need of restoration, which the activities of the Palazzo will help to realize.
