Palazzo Ducale Venturi was built in the Sixteenth Century for the Templars and then became a noble fortress. Strategically located in the quiet hinterland of Salento, the Palace is in Minervino di Lecce, at less than 10 km from the well-known Otranto; from here in about ten minutes by car you can reach beautiful sandy or rocks beaches.
While offering all the comforts of a 5 star deluxe hotel, the Palazzo Ducale Venturi is not “simply” this. Its stone vaults, the frescoes, the original paving stone typical of Lecce region… all inside this property is steeped in history, in five centuries of art and culture. vacanze palazzo salento - dimore storiche italiane

In ancient times, Minervino di Lecce was called “lo re de li casali”, that means “ the king of hamlets” (as you can see on an epigraph engraved on the side door of the Church of San Pietro, A.D. 1473): many hamlets did actually surround Minervino, as Cerfignano, Cocumola and Specchia Gallone. King Ferdinando I d’Aragona chose it to be the fortress of defense against Turkish, and ordered to build a castle, which was unfortunately taken and then destroyed after the conquest of Otranto in 1480. The Saracen raids forced the inhabitants to hide in the hinterland, so that the land, where Minervino will rise up, began to be populated again only in the first years of XVI century. It grew continuously and around the half of XVII century it counted 16 villages, including the one known as “Giudeca”, where a Jewish community lived, and the main one, called “Minervino”.
Minervino was feud of the Venturis , who built two castles there: the Old Castle and the New Castle. Nowadays we can still admire how the New Castle kept its original charm untouched, even if it has been restored.
The Venturis were an ancient noble family hailing from Salerno; they arrived in Terra D’Otranto in the XIV century, with Jacuzio di Tomaso Ventura di Salerno. The lineage was divided into several branches, some of which are now extinct. In 1414, after the marriage of Giacomo Venturi with Lady Antonia Sembiase di Cosenza, owner of the dukedom of Minervino, a branch of this dynasty moved to the region of Lecce. Another branch of Venturis moved first to Copertino and then to Galatina; while a third branch, healing from Modugno, moved to Bari.
This ancient and noble family owned may feuds in Terra D’Otranto: the hamlets of Morigino, Palmariggi, Castro, Maglie, Melpignano, Cerfignano (mid 1480s) and Minervino (two thirds of which were sold by the Filomarinos to the Venturis in the XVI century) belonged to them. And it was exactly on the feud of Minervino that Giuseppe Maria Venturi was entitled Duke of Minervino by King Carlo, with a Diploma the 11th September 1683. The Venturis extended their estates by buying several feuds during the centuries, such as the one of Giurdignano in 1378, Giuggianello, Miggianello and Depressa few decades later, Cocumola, Castiglione and Capraroca del Capo in 1583. Finally, the feud of Tuglie was offered by Filippo Guarino to his nephew Giuseppe Ferdinando Ventura, Duke of Minervino the 14th October 1726.
Today, Palazzo Ducale Ventury – Luxury Relais & Wellness offers all the comforts to its guests, maintaining the fortify character of the manor house: embrasures on the top of the walls, stone gargoyles cannon shaped, an observation tower on the right side of the façade and machicolations by all the windows of the first floor are distinctive marking of the defensive function that this palace had back in the past.
