Palazzo delle Clarisse Hotel

palazzo delle clarisse - dimore storiche italiane

In the beautiful Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria rises the seventeenth-century Palazzo delle Clarisse: a landscape of rare beauty, at the edge of the ancient urban center, situated at the top of a cliff once lapped by the waves of the sea. The architectonic structure consists of different levels, following the profile of the rocky spur on which the different volumes composing the church, the convent and the cloister are distributed, opened on the coastal landscape with its wide arches. Of the ancient church, now part of the palace, remain the beautiful mullioned windows with spiral column, a poly-lobed window and the great saint stone arch, covered with frescoes depicting stylized flowers and swirls.

The incomparable charm of a historic 1600 building blends the unique atmosphere of the historical residences amid frescoes and elegant furnishings. The beautiful panoramic terraces offer a breathtaking view of Mount Etna and Stromboli Island and an admirable view upon the old town of Amantea. Set 400 meters from the seafront of Amantea, the Palace is a 15-minute walk from the beach. You enter the Palazzo delle Clarisse by the great seventeenth-century portal climbing the princely entrance stairway, and after having admired the great arch of the Chapel of St. Clare, you reach the floor where the celebrations take place with a capacity of 240 guests, with its spacious halls: The Music Hall, the Hall of the Marquis, the Hall of the Bishop, the Room of the Abbess, the Choir Hall, the room of the Pleiades, the Hall of the Arab Stele.
Going through the halls of this ancient dwelling is like walking through history. The Roman torches create a special fairy-tale atmosphere during Summer evenings.
The floral decorations, together with porcelains, mirrors, crystals and silverware contribute to create a precious environment.
From the Music Hall you can see the cloister of St. Claire, by going directly to two of the three large terraces that offer a divine view of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Inside the building you can admire an impressive collection of art copies of the great masters of Flemish painting, Impressionism and European twentieth century
The Palazzo delle Clarisse currently houses a Hotel and a quality Restaurant, in addition to being the center of promoting cultural activities and events.
In the Restaurant, beautifully restored and equipped with a fully equipped kitchen, take place private ceremonies, weddings and gala dinners, inside the Palazzo there is also a small chapel. The Palazzo preserves important works of art, including an Arab funeral stele of the eleventh century, a seventeenth-century wooden statue of St. Clare, and various coats of arms in stone.
Historical charm, combined with the breathtaking landscape, make this property an exclusive location for the organization of events. The rooftop terrace, the cloister and the interior rooms constitute an ideal set for photo shoot and film.

Stemma - dimore storiche italiane

The Palace takes its name from its birth as a religious Convent of the Franciscan Poor Clares.
Inside the Convent the unmarried daughters of patrician families, intended for monastic life from their parents in order to prevent splitting of the Crown Estate, led a cloistered life. The structure shows a squat building body, stretched toward the sea to which a small church is connected.
The monastic complex was built in 1620, on a site where the Palazzo Folleri once stood. The site was acquired by the cloistered nuns in 1618 because the old convent in the Pinta site, which opened in 1603, became inadequate for the needs of the nuns, due to its small size and proximity to the private homes in the area, which was deemed disturbing to cloister life. The Napoleonic conquest led to the suppression of the convent in 1810 and the property, confiscated along with other church properties, was put on sale by the government and was later bought by Carlo De Luca Marquis of Lizzano, notarized by an act drawn up on November 3, 1812. The Marquis de Luca di Lizzano made it his noble residence. The new transformation of the private residence produced numerous structural modifications, including the transformation of the church with its many mullioned windows and the construction of a stately staircase inside the cloister. The orchard, on the other hand, was transformed into a garden and its arches were refortified
The descendants of Marquis De Luca lived in the palace until 1977.
Following a period of decay, the building was purchased and restored by the current owner, Prof.. Fausto Perri. The palazzo preserves important works of art, including an Arab funeral Stele of the eleventh century, significant archaeological document that testifies the Arab presence in Amantea from the end of the ninth and the first half of the eleventh century. It is a fragment on which a Quranic verse is carved: “Did not conceive nor was conceived and no one is equal.” It also contains a seventeenth-century wooden statue of St. Clare, and the various coats of arms in stone belonging to the patrician families.
The precious and laborious restoration of 1988 made it possible to regain the old convent atmosphere.
The Palace currently houses a hotel and a restaurant of excellence.
