Palace Orsini

DSC3488 - dimore storiche italiane

The Orsini Palace is one of Renaissance palaces and the late sixteenth century in the city of Todi. This has the characteristic to rest its foundations above the first ring of Umbrian-Etruscan walls and over a part of the “niches” where is believed once arose the Roman temple of Mars. The palace is located in the heart of the historical center of the city, within walking distance of all amenities (cafes, restaurants, typical products) and city life, and all the tourist and cultural attractions of the area (Churches, Roman cisterns, museums, theater).

In the palace there is an elegantly furnished and equipped apartment for 4 people (two bedrooms with two bathrooms and a shared living room). Great care has been taken to create the decor, with respect for the things done in a workmanlike manner, because the guest can feel welcomed at home. That luxury, to live away from the bustle of big cities, to give the right value to the desire to rebalance one’s soul. To understand the true values of life, the dream of being able to live and belong to another era.

The large living room is ideal for organizing private events for which you can set up buffet
The guesthouse cooperates with external professionals, it is possible to use facilities very close to the apartments to spend pleasant days in a spa or pool, you have the option to book and enjoy beauty services on request at the residence (body massage, facial massage , pedicure and manicure).

Todi is located just a few kilometers from Orvieto (50km), Perugia (40km), Assisi (60km), Spello (50 km) and Spoleto (60km) are easily accessible and well connected, in about 30 minutes by car. You can have a private car with chauffeur NCC (car rental with driver) to easily visit the city, evocative surrounding attractions, travel to and from the airport (Rome, Perugia, Florence).

In its vast artistic heritage, Todi boasts a number of exquisite villas from the Renaissance and the late Sixteenth Century. Among them is Palazzo Orsini Laurenti, which is one of a kind for its location, between the first Umbro-Etruscan walls and a portion of Roman “niches,” where it is believed the Temple of Mars stood.

In the Fourteenth Century, in the same place where the Palazzo stands today, there were probably the houses of the noble Celembrini family. On the first of April, 1626, with a deed by Jerome Leonj, Giuseppe Celembrini sold all five houses, together with 5 storehouses and a number of funds, for a shocking 1900 scudi to the knight Neri Laurenti and his brothers.

he Celembrini family was in a rough patch economically which permitted the Laurenti family to, very cleverly, buy a residence in the center of the city, thus reaching noble status. In the years after 1626 work was done to transform the buidings into a noble Palazzo, with internal and external modifications. On the 28th of February 1573 the priors of Todi granted Antonio the arch above the door as compensation for damage done.

Two recurring decorative elements characterize the loggia: the fleur-de-lis and the eight-pointed star. The fleur-de-lis and star are simply the heraldic symbols of the Laurenti and Sardoli families derived from a wedding in the Sixteenth Century between Paolo Laurenti, judge but not yet noble, and Francesca Sardoli, from one of the oldest and most distinguished families in Todi.

To show the noble alliance the Laurentis united their coat of arms to the Sardolis’ and ended up adding their name to the Sardoli’s as well. The fleur-de-lis and star, in fact, are repeated almost obsessively, not only on the balustrade but also inside the building: on the floors and the magnificent coffers ceiling paintings, giving rise to an exquisite “heraldic dynamism.” The same emblems are added in an oval on the vault of the landing access to the main floor.

The Eighteenth Century was a time of great vitality for the Palazzo and the family. The local chronicles are rich with references to the Palazzo, where, in its living room, endless games of faro were played, in which the then Count of Laurenti, Domenico, would lose large sums of money. On the 9th of October 1713, King Louis XIV of France granted the title of Count to the Laurentis. The family remained in possession of the building and most of its assets, including the large villa of San Martino in Vasciano, until the late Nineteenth Century.

Then the building was bought by the counts of Lalli Ripalata, to whom we owe the creation of the decorative elements of several rooms. By the start of the Twentieth Century the property was bought by the Orsini family.
