Castle of Torre in Pietra

castello torre pietra - dimore storiche italiane

The Castle of Torre in Pietra is a wonderful architectural complex of medieval origin, with important examples of architecture and painting seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
They are still perfectly preserved moat, the guard tower and the walls that embrace the whole complex, in which, over the centuries, have been built and transformed several important buildings.
It dominates the seventeenth-century building, in the center of the village in which, going up to the main floor, you can admire the magnificent frescoes, painted by Pier Leone Ghezzi, who decorated the halls with a sequence of landscapes, trompe l ‘oeuil, religious scenes, figures of nobles and clerics, allegorical figures, coats of arms, portraits of Cardinals and Pope Benedict XIII.
Front of the building a large courtyard, partly paved with Roman paving, leads to two large gardens, shaded by plane trees and ancient pines, with an old fountain in the center.
On the right side overlooking the beautiful octagonal Church of St. Antonio Abate, eighteenth century work of the famous architect Ferdinando Fuga, also decorated by Ghezzi.
On the left, on the ground floor of another building, you reach the large room Peretti, with its impressive vaulted ceiling and beautiful fireplace, recently restored.
A belt of woodland surrounds and protects the castle that keeps its charming character and secret despite its proximity to the Via Aurelia in Rome.

The current complex of buildings has medieval origins and was formed in the shape of a castrum, a fortified agricultural village around a stately home, according to a rural settlement pattern widespread at the time in the Roman countryside; you can still see today observing towers, ramparts, the moat and walls.

The first document which describes this settlement with the ancient name of “Castrum Castiglionis” is a testament that dates back to 1254, in which is mentioned among the assets that a noble Roman family of Alberteschi Normans bequeathed to one of his sons. Later becomes the property of Anguillara and Massimo.

The name of Stone Tower, which is derived from an isolated tower built on a stone rock near the castle, is indicated for the first time in a 1620 plant where the seals of Peretti principles are illustrated.
In 1590, in fact, the estate was bought by Camilla Peretti, sister of Pope Sixtus V °, and Michele Peretti, nephew of the Pope, commissioned architect Francesco Peperelli building a new mansion on the ruins of the medieval castle.

On the main floor several rooms, according to the custom of the time, were covered with decorated leather panels, other frescoes. The building we see today still retains almost intact its seventeenth-century plant and the coat of arms Peretti stands still on the front door.
But the very high standard of irreparably their family heritage nicked life and so, in 1639, the Peretti had to sell the castle and the estate to Prince Orazio Falconieri.

The falconers, who had in Stone Tower among their possessions for more than two centuries, were the powerful bankers who reached the pinnacle of power and wealth in 1724 when Alexander, nephew of Horace, was appointed Cardinal by Pope Benedict XIII. Between 1712 and 1725, Alexander wanted to change in part the seventeenth aspect of the castle, calling two geniuses of his time: the architect Ferdinando Fuga and the painter Pier Leone Ghezzi.
The medieval church was demolished and rebuilt on the Escape design, who also designed the new entrance to the palace staircase. Both the church and the halls of the main floor were then painted by Ghezzi.

Since 1870 the castle and the estate passed into the hands of several owners (the Carpegna, Florio, the Agricultural Reclamation Company) and knew a long period of neglect, until in 1926 became the property of the Senator Luigi Albertini. He, having had to give up the leadership of the BBC for his opposition to fascism, he dedicated all of its resources to a massive reclamation of wetlands, of a model farm boot, and restoration of the castle, the church and the village, assisted by his son Leonardo Albertini and the son Nicolò Carandini.
