Castle of Montegiove

castello montegiove umbria - dimore storiche italiane

In an absolutely breathtaking position, the Castle of Montegiove lies hidden amidst the green and lush green Umbrian hills, in the middle of an estate that extends for 1200 hectares on the border between Orvieto and Perugia. The castle was constructed around 1280 by the Bulgarelli Family, counts of Marciano, and it is one of the oldest castle in the region.
Since 1780, it has been of ownership of the Misciattelli Family who over the centuries further developed the agricultural estate. Nowadays, it includes an active farming business, winery and exclusive agriturismo. Following an important and passionate refurbishment project undertaken by the owners, this beautiful and enchanting location has been meticulously preserved over time, from generation in generation.
The 1200 hectares of splendid Umbria countryside which make up the estate consist of vineyards, olive groves, pastures and arable land. The main products of the farm are Rosso Orvietano DOC and Umbria IGT wines, extra-virgin olive oil, wood, truffles and there is also a free-ranging Chianina cattle on the estate.
In the surrounding area there are various paths, varying in size, extremely suitable for trekking, horse riding and mountain biking, and along these scenic routes there are various idyllic locations perfect for picnics, far away from busy everyday urban life.
The wines produced by the estate are red and a rosé, exclusively made with hand picked grapes grown on the vineyards in the valley below the castle. Subsequently, they are vinified in the old 16th century cellars located below the castle, which have been remodernised in recent times. This has allowed the Castle of Montegiove to reemerge as one of the more important players in the Umbrian and Italian wine market, as it was in the 70s. Recently many of the vineyards were replanted and the surface was reduced in order to concentrate on high quality wine production. The vineyards are made up of various varieties, such as Sangiovese with its classic clones of Brunelli and Prugnolo gentile as well as recent clone selections of the Chianti Classico-area. The other varieties include Sagrantino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. There are also still vineyards that date back to the 70s planted with Montepulciano and Sangiovese.
In an ongoing project, historic vines of the estate are selected and propagated. The plantation of vineyards for conservation of genetic resources and for future grape production has begun in spring 2013.

montegiove umbria - dimore storiche italiane

The Castle of Montegiove rises on a hilltop in the green heart of Umbria, on the border of Orvieto and Perugia. Its construction dates back to the Medieval era of city states (12th century) and the castle has been conserved with great attention and care, thanks to which today it is still one of the best preserved fortresses of that era. It is immersed in the rich Umbrian flora, and the castle enjoys fabulous views over the surrounding countryside, making it hard to believe that the bustling cities Rome and Florence are just over an hour away.
The castle thanks its name to the existence of a Roman temple dedicated to “Iuppiter elicius” which was proven by the discovery of two votive terracotta heads of the God; Giove (Iupiter or Iuppiter in Latin) is the Roman god of thunder.
The castle itself was constructed around 1280, by the Bulgarelli Family, counts of Parrano and Marsciano. Over the centuries, ownership of the castle changed hands frequently, amongst which Blessed Angelina, born in Montegiove in 1357 from Giacomo of the Counts of Marciano and considered the founder of the Third Regular Order of Saint Francis; subsequently it because residence of the Monadelschi della Vipera – mentioned in Dante’s Purgatory – and of the famous mercenary Gattamelata.
Since 1780, the Castle of Montegiove has been property of the Marquises Misciattelli, who over the centuries further developed the agricultural estate, which fully embraces both traditional methods and modern efficiency.
Montegiove is a small hamlet with less than 100 inhabitants; although hard to imagine now, in the past it was one of the pieveri of Orvieto – a piviere is a territory bound to a pieve, i.e a rural church endowed with a baptistery – subsequently it constituted a municipality in the Papal State.
At just a short distance from Montegiove, we find the “Scarzuola”, a famous convent and “ideal city”; its construction was commissioned by the owners of the Castle of Montegiove in 1282, as is shown from written documentation dating back to that era, with which the construction of an oratory was requested, on the spot where Saint Francis of Assisi built a hut in 1218.
