Castle of Gabiano

castello gabiano matrimoni - dimore storiche italiane

Situated in the Piedmont Region of north-west of Italy, boasts more than a century of history. In the 8th century, the document signed by Carlo Magno already testify the presence of a “Cortem magnam nominam Gabianam”. In the remote 1164, Federico the 1st granted the investiture to the Marquis Guglielmo II of Monferrato. From this time the Castello di Gabiano was an important strategic and economic place, theatre of wars, passing over to the Montiglio, the Paleologo and the Gonzaga until the duke Ferdinando gave it to Agostino Durazzo Pallavicini in the year 1622,
granting him the title of Marquis of Gabiano.

The city’s archives of the XIII century already narrated the quality of the grapes and the wine production of Gabiano. Today Giacomo Cattaneo Adorno, the last Marquis of Gabiano ,together with his wife Emanuela, passionate and determined, directly engaged in an intensive wine production, are above all committed to capture the characteristics of the terroir to extract the raw material.
In this way they can assure that the wine making tradition of the family, updated with the current oenology knowledge, can stand comparison with great secular wines. Gabiano cover itself one of the oldest and smallest DOC in Italy: “A Matilde Giustiniani” Gabiano DOC Riserva. All other wines produced are DOC and DOCG: “La Braja” Barbera d’Asti DOCG, “Il Ruvo” Grignolino del Monferrato Casalese DOC, Rubino di Cantavenna DOC, “Gavius” Monferrato Rosso DOC, “Castelvere” Monferrato Chiaretto DOC, “Corte” Monferrato Bianco DOC, , “Adornes” Barbera d’Asti Superiore DOCG, “Castello” Piemonte Chardonnay DOC.

The castle offers also a charming and exclusive accommodation. After few years of careful restoration, the Hunting Lodge is now open with 4 Luxury Suites and 2 Apartments. This is the place where to savor and discover the fascinating world of wines. At the castle grounds, during the summer, guests can enjoy the relaxing and intimate atmosphere of the private swimming pool. The wine tasting room and the annexed Wine Shop offer the opportunity to buy and taste beside the wines of the estate, a wide selection of km zero local products. The Farm Restaurant “3 Orologi” newly open and located in the ancient court, invites to indulge with the “tasting” experience by sampling the “suggestion of the day menu” and try organic food and traditional recipes. The immense view on the unspoilt countryside is worth itself a visit.
The castle is surrounded by a wide 5 hectar Park, including a Labyrinth. Guests will be able to walk around this real monument documented as one of the rare example of historical garden of Piemonte.

storia castello gabiano - dimore storiche italiane

Situated in dominating position in the Po Valley, the Gabiano castle, one of the vastest and most ancient castles in Monferrato, was already mentioned in the 9th century sources. In 1164 Federico Barbarossa donated the castle to Marquis Guglielmo II of Monferrato and, disputed by various families for centuries, in 1624 the duke Ferdinando Gonzaga finally gave the castle, together with the marquisate, to Agostino Durazzo settling so the debts owed by the court of Mantova to the noble Genovese family. The Durazzo dynasty is said to be the descendant from Giorgio di Durazzo of Albania who, due to the Turkish persecutions, fled his country and landed in Genoa in 1389. From silk artisans to merchants among Genoa, Antwerp and Venice, the Durazzo family reached the highest level of their power by the end of the 16th century extending from commercial to financial activity and while reaching the position of doge in 1573. Nine of the Durazzo family were doges of the Genovese Republic.
Their tradition of culture and magnificence, testified by the grandeur of palaces and villas in Genoa, passed down from Giacomo Filippo II (1672 – 1764) to his grandson Giacomo Filippo III (1729 – 1812) who, being an art collector and bibliophile, founded an important and vast library rich with precious manuscripts, incunabula, 16th century stamped books and rare volumes. The latter, founder of the Durazzo Accademy in 1782, was also known for being a naturalist and founder of the first museum of natural history in Genoa.
In his residence of Via Balbi, the Durazzo Pallavicini Palace, commissioned to the architect Bartolomeo Bianco by Giò Agostino Balbi in 1618, Giacomo Filippo started the construction of the monumental staircase in neo-classic style by the architect Andrea Tagliafichi in 1774. In the same period he undertook the “restoration” of the Gabiano castle transforming it into a “holiday palace”. His interest in botany induced him to take care of the development of the garden and his extension in particular. The works for restoration of the castle started in 1789 and finished in 1793.
In the 19th century a heavy restoration cancelled the tower aspects and only in 1907, following the collapse of a tower, the marquis Giacomo Durazzo Pallavicini decided to restore the medieval character of the castle and to bring it back to its original shape starting to rebuild the south wing. On the advice of Alfredo d’Andrade, superintendent of the monuments in Piedmont, Liguria and Val d’Aosta, the marquis summoned the young architect Lamberto Cusani, who already had done some restoration works in Emilia.
The restoration works, interrupted by the big war, were retaken in the 1920’s. Matilde Durazzo Pallavicini “with exquisite artistic taste, wishes to give its original medieval splendour back to the castle” wrote the architect, who with artists and labour force enthusiastically did all he could in this “poetic rebirth of the castle” where “it seems that time has gone backwards in centuries: one can feel the medieval atmosphere”.
Within the impontant renovation works is included the project of “the labyrinth of the Gabiano castle”.
It is considered one of the rare examples documented within the framework of historic gardens of Piedmont (there is also a labyrinth no longer existing in the Villa Solaro garden of Margarita in Margarita – Cuneo). This has an exceptional importance not only for its rarity but also for the historic period in which it was realized which, as confirmed in the analyses of the Buxus sempervirens examples that delimited the paths, dates back to the 1930’s when the already dominating taste for landscape integrated with formal gardens put nearby the residence but never in the form of a labyrinth. The only documented case in which the confusing theme was resumed is set up by the project of the Labyrinth in the Virginian Sacred Forest in Mantua (of which only one layout remains), edited by the Turin architect Giuseppe Roda. As in Mantova, the Gabiano labyrinth evokes the return to the past and finds its place within the framework of the restoration project assigned by the marquise Matilde Giustiniani to the Parma architect Lamberto Cusani to whom we owe the actual neo-medieval aspect of the castle and surroundings. The location of the labyrinth in the centre of the park emphasizes the contrast between the rigid and geometrical lines of the structure and the natural park that surrounds it, calling to mind the medieval concept of forest such as natural labyrinth (park) and labyrinth as artificial forest where nature is rigorously manipulated and controlled by man.
