Castle of Castelnuovo Tancredi

castelnuovo tancredi montalcino - dimore storiche italiane

The estate of Castelnuovo Tancredi encompasses more than 600 hectares of the surrounding hillside of Buonconvento, between Montalcino and Siena, in the Orcia Valley. There are 5 stone farmhouses that are part of the property, that together with the villa itself, are dedicated to the the wine production, offices and the hospitality aspect of the estate.
Many illustrious Italian families have left their mark on this property over the centuries, such as the Guglieschi, the Borghesi and the Tancredi families, from whom the property has taken its name. The current owners, the Venturini Del Greco family, who acquired the estate in 1897, have strived to maintain the traditions and the flavor of Tuscany while making necessary improvements along the way.
Dating as far back as 1315, according to the property registrars, the land surrounding the main villa was extensively planted with olive groves, vineyards, and vast forests of oak trees.
In the 1700’s, the olive and wine production grew to such proportions that the vineyards represented 40 hectares of the property, and therefore justified the construction of numerous cellars in the scattered farmhouses, as well as an olive press.
Back in 1995, when the first ideas to establish the Orcia valley as a recognized wine producing denomination were being created, that then gave birth to the D.O.C Val d’Orcia, Guido Venturini Del Greco decided to continue the historical wine production by concentrating on the quality of the wine instead of the quantity.
Following the desire to strive to make a high quality wine, at the end of the 1990’s, the vineyard was reduced to 8 hectares, with new implants of Sangiovese, Trebbiano and Malvasia toscana, which are part of the DNA of the area, and new vines of Merlot, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon were added.
The entire farm upholds the “Organic Agricultural” methods, from the cereal and grain production to the D.O.P extravirgin olive oil production.

The Castle as we know today is composed of the tower which was built originally in approximately 1000 DC, and used as a granery. In 1199, it was the main headquarters for the army of Siena in the historical battle known as the Assedio of Montalcino, which lasted over 16 months.
The Siennese army managed in the end to conquer Montalcino “through hunger and not thanks to weapons”. In the early 1500’s, Cardinal Tancredi acquired the property and added the Renaissance Villa as his dimora, thus creating the main complex of the castle.
Subsequently, the chapel was built by the architect and painter, Baldassare Peruzzi, who also designed the building used today as the wine cellar, located at the beginning of the cypress-lined-drive that leads to the Castle.

During World War II, Castelnuovo Tancredi was occupied by officials of the German army who lived alongside the female representatives of the Venturini Del Greco family.
The Castle has recently undergone a 2 year long extensive renovation, giving the maximum importance to the historical value, tradition and original architecture of the castle’s structure while adding modern comforts where necessary.
The floor tiles have been removed and then replaced without altering the original design, likewise the windows and doors , that have also been restored by adding thermal window panes. Particular attention was also paid to the ceiling “frescos” and painted wood beams, always opting for a detailed restoration instead of replacement.

The castle consists of 9 bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a large eat-in antique kitchen with modern ammenities, a formal dining room, 2 living rooms, 2 frescoed reading rooms, and outdoor dining and sitting areas. There is also the possibility to rent the Vicar’s residence alongside the main villa, that accomodates 6 more guests in 3 double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms.
There is a private tennis court , inground pool, and wellness spa/gym for exclusive use by the castle’s guests.
