Borgo Riccio in Cilento

villa bb cilento - dimore storiche italiane

Borgo Riccio is located on the perimeter of the historical center of Torchiara and is overlooked by the church-fortress of Saint Salvatore built in the XII century. Torchiara is a medieval town situated a few kilometers from Paestum, the blue flag see of Agropoli and the city of Salerno.
Borgo Riccio is plunged into a vast park characterized by typical mediterranean vegetation and agriculture: olive groves, fruit trees and white figs. Borgo Riccio is an enchanting oasis of peace where it is possible to enjoy the relaxing rhythm of Cilento’s culture. Borgo Riccio’s owner will introduce you to traditional Italian hospitality and to the roots of the mediterranean culture.
Borgo Riccio is an ancient mansion of an old family of Torchiara: the Riccio’s. It was restored in the 90’s and it develops on two levels connected by stairs made with bricks and stone extracted from the area. The design allows the two buildings to blend perfectly with nature.
The compound features two houses and three dovecotes: the house at the low level, built along the street headed downtown features one large living room, four bedrooms each with bath en-suite, a stone table under a blossomed vine pergola and a pensatoio (literally thinking space) under a giant olive tree.
Climbing up the stairs by vases of flowers and agaves you will reach a little square by the brick oven where you will see Salone Milano, a space opened to the surrounding nature thanks to the large windows. Salone Milano features projectors for screenings, wifi and elements of design: the trono di Macintosh, Zanuso table, Magistretti dresser, and Artemis lights. Salone Milano is an ideal place for work meetings and conferences.
Climb on and you will arrive at the swimming pool and the high house with its outdoor living areas through which you will get to the Palma Square. There you will find the palm-lined avenue connecting Borgo Riccio to Torchiara’s center. The high house is a belvedere allowing you to enjoy an eagle-eye view of the whole valley and the sea. The old gates grant access to the ground floor: a living room with a full-sized Napolitan nativity, a dining room with an old stone fire place and a studio. The upper floor features three other rooms with en-suite bathroom.
Climbing down the second staircase and diving into the olive grove you will reach the library, the Little Tower bedroom with en-suite bathroom, the wellness area with gym, Jacuzzi and sauna.
The presence of family antiques reinforce the atmosphere of tradition throughout the entire property. The furniture is also enriched by objects coming from all over the word and collected by the owner during her many travels abroad.

Torchiara is an ancient medieval town whose history is intertwined with the Baronage of Cilento. In the nineteenth century Torchiara was appointed Capoluogo of the Distretto di Vallo which lasted until after the unification of Italy. Thanks to its nearly one thousand year old history, Torchiara features 14 ancient buildings connected to each other by a Green Way accessible by walking or bike.
More importantly, Torchiara has been home for many. It was the starting point of the revolution in 1828 and then again in 1848 lead by the Pavone brothers and Giambattista Riccio. The last was martyr of the war that brought the unification of Italy – and ancestor of Angela Riccio de Braud the current owner of Borgo Riccio.
Andrea Riccio (the current owners grandfather) used to meet Andrea Torre in the old casino of Torchiara. Andrea Torre was a childhood friend of his, who later became Senator of the Kingdom, member of the Accademia of Lincei, founder of Mondo and director of La Stampa (two important Italian newspapers).
Part of Borgo Riccio has been lost in time, remember only by the ancient portals of the buildings and by memories orally handed down through history. However Borgo Riccio has come back to life as a town where the past of Cilento is cherished and treasured along with its cultural values.
Angela Riccio de Braud has become a renowned endorser of Torchiara and its cultural patrimony. She committed to the restoration of the borgo, recovering building techniques and materials typical to the artistic tradition of the Cilento: cilentani plasters, wrought iron hand forged by area blacksmiths, marble floor crafted according to the ancient way, old-wood-beamed ceilings, etc… Since the restoration of the borgo was complete Angela Riccio de Braud continually promotes projects aimed to bring note to the region.
Angela Riccio de Braud is an architect who spent most of her life between Milan and Rome. She committed the first 12 years of her career to ecology, writing for the national paper Il Sole 24 ore and directing the scientific review of CNR Acqua e aria. After working for another 16 years as Central Director of Communication for Fiera Milano and then for 4 years as Assistant of the General Director for RAI (the main national Italian broadcasting channel), she decided to return to the land of her family roots to help with the revaluation of Torchiara and Cilento.
She decided to turn Borgo Riccio into a B&B, offering her guests itineraries to help them discover Cilento’s natural, cultural and culinary patrimony. Currently, Angela Riccio de Braud has been promoting cultural projects like “Discovering the Grand Tour” and “Story Riders” – a creative writing event.
The cultural tradition of the old casino has been revived through Borgo Riccios which has become an important meeting point for economists, sociologists, politicians, artists and philosophers
